It gives an advance warning of the road narrowing on the other side of the road. This creates a potential hazard as oncoming vehicles may cross over the centre line. For areas where the road narrows on the left (near side) use the "Road Narrows Left" Sign. The diagram usually won't be used if the narrowing doesn't remove a lane from the junction and the lane does not have a severe taper.
